There actually is a market for chess coaching.
Chess is actually a lot more useful than a lot that is taught in schools. Chess enhances memory, strategic thinking, spatial awareness...
You can play people of different ages even from a young age...
Chess has a rich history... and even in its modern form a lot of associations and clubs have been arond from the early 1900s or even 1800s...
YES you can do a lot of work by yourself and practically all chess players who take it seriously in any degree do... BUT a coach can enhance your learning experience and SMART players see this. GM Kevin Spraggett even listened to lectures from players who were weaker than him when he was young and still learnt a lot for example...
There is a BIG market for those that are at the beginner level. There are some teachers who have little OTB experience that teach young players for example...
Since I've been playing the game from the age of four... worldwide selling novel on chess at the age of 21... read about chess practically every day... I KNOW the competent coaches including former national head of coaching in the UK... and am happy to recommend students to BETTER coaches if they're advanced after being coached by me. Personally I really think chessplayers should be comfotable with asking for a little money for coaching- you get what you pay for to an extent. If you can afford to do a bit for free that's fine but nobody should condem those who make some money from it... regular teachers are paid pretty well for example.
Personally I like teaching players who are keen, understand the value of chess and want to learn. I allocate some time to do this alongside my other coaching and work... feel free to contact me while I'm available!
