Huddersfield Audi First Review...

 So.....

Let's get right into the first part of the review...

I let one of the salespeople know I was thinking of visiting and he gave me a video message encouraging me to do it... I did it in my own way though...

I decided to visit at the start of their day, 8am. Drove to front car parking, all full apart from one space which I took. Shows they're busy. I'd read about the good reviews their receptionist had so asked a lady in Audi uniform if she was the receptionist... she wasn't but was in service... (I have done reception and lead gen at Huddersfield Audi before)...

Anyway... went in did quite brisk tour of ground floor. Chatted to some of the customers, some of whom live very close to me. Had one free drink. Showed a few staff the video...

At least two members of staff were still working on the ground floor when I working there, which shows good staff retention. I guess I do have to deduct a slight part from my score for one guess that my blog had '42' views, lols.

But anyway overall I'm glad to see it has less of a Covid vibe than when I worked there- obviously covid is not good for car sales anyway. The reception is in a different place and they have an ipad now.

I intend to do one more site visit to finish my review. Have taken some pictures...

Delirious

 I want to go deeper

But I don't know how to swim
I want to be meeker
But have you seen this old earth?
I want to fly higher
But these arms won't take me there
I want to be, I want to be

Maybe I could run
Maybe I could fly, to you
Do you feel the same
When all you see is
Blame in me?

And the wonder of it all is that I'm living just to fall
More in love with you [x2]

I want to go deeper
But is it just a stupid whim?
I want to be weaker
Be a help to the strong
I want to run faster
But this old leg won't carry me
I want to be, I want to be

Maybe I could run
Maybe I could fly, to you
Do you feel the same
When all you see is
Blame in me?

And the wonder of it all is that I'm living just to fall
More in love with you [x2]

Maybe I could run
Maybe I could follow
It's time to walk the path
Where many seem to fall
Hold me in your arms
Just like any father would
How long do we have to wait?
How long, we're going all the way

And the wonder of it all is that I'm living just to fall
More in love with you

Why ‘Independence’ would be Terrible for Scottish Shareholders and the rest of Scotland

Lloyds, RBS, HSBC, Shell, Asda... they can’t all be wrong. All these business people would be screaming for Scotland to be independent if it would make them more money. But it will lose them a lot of money, which is why they are speaking out. The most convincing statement for me was from Douglas Flint, chairman of HSBC. You don’t get to be chairman of HSBC unless you know about money.

It’s quite amusing to see Alex Salmond tell people that they shouldn’t listen to ‘big oil’. I know who I would rather listen to- people from Shell who are the biggest company in the FTSE, and BP who are worldwide experts in oil. That’s much more believable than the ‘counterpoint’ of view given by the BBC for example, of one man saying “We have good oil resources”. Most of the time, companies don’t like to speak out on political issues, as this could turn some customers against them. However this issue is so important that they are prepared to do it.

I’m going to be serious here. As a shareholder, you are a part owner of a business. It is not just some letters on a screen. You have a responsibility to act in the best interests of that business, as long as it does not negatively effect you. And mark my words, it will negatively effect you if Scotland votes ‘Yes’. SSE, Lloyds, RBS, Standard Life... the list goes on and on. They will all fall drastically. Just the speculation from one negative poll was the main cause of SSE dropping more than 2% on Monday the 8th of September. Just imagine what an actual ‘Yes’ vote would do to that share. Lloyds, RBS and Standard Life would all be hit hard- there will be BIG falls across the board. Practically every share will fall if Scotland votes ‘Yes’.

Quite a lot of Scottish people won’t care at all about Banks or Financial service companies. They would when it effects their livelihood- the loss of financial service jobs would hurt the whole Scottish economy. So that could be pain in the future for them. It could actually benefit the north of England, where I live, but I’m still writing this. However what would effect everyone directly and immediately is higher food prices. I’ve worked for Asda, which is part of Wall-Mart, one of the biggest companies in the world. I don’t love them as a company at all- they can be very ruthless. But I cannot recall one instance of Asda becoming involved in a political issue. They don’t in general elections. But they have directly said that food prices will be higher if Scotland votes ‘Yes’- it will be so bad for them as a business that they are saying this even though it could offend nearly half of their customers.

I’ve been thinking for a while of how to word this, but I think it’s best just to instinctively say what’s on my mind. A lot of people are voting ‘Yes’ for emotional reasons- they want supposed freedom and independence almost for the buzz of it. But it wouldn’t even be real independence if they still want to be part of the EU- they would still be just a puppet country that has laws imposed on them by Brussels. They wouldn’t enjoy the freedom when it leads to economic hardship for themselves and their families. I cannot see Scotland voting Yes, but in an imaginary world in which they did, I can see them asking to come back in ten years time.

I believe the vote will be close, but I am convinced Scotland will vote No. However that relies on people like you understanding how important a decision this is, voting No and convincing others to vote No as well.

I must clarify for 2024 I am not a HSBC shareholder and don't like them.

Classic

This is my best share article in terms of style so to celebrate 10 years giving it away FREE here... check it out on Fool too ;)

It’s 8:00am on Friday morning. I live in quite a middle-class area, but there’s an Aldi near me. And already there is a pretty long queue of elderly people eager for the doors to open…

As I shop there every week, I make a note of the kind of people who frequent the store. I’ve shopped there at different times: I would say around 70% of the people are over 50; some may describe them as thrifty. It’s a good job they are, because Aldi will charge them for a plastic bag.

There is no music playing in Aldi. You have to shove a pound into the trolley if you want one. The floor is made up of yellow tiles, some of which are cracked. At 8:00am, the narrow aisles will often be half obstructed by big boxes.

Yet the prices are all cheap. You could go to a shelf and randomly pick more or less anything and it would actually be good value for money probably, not just cheap. The fresh vegetables and fruit are quite good. And there is always a massive queue at the checkout of people waiting to pay for their goods, rushed through quickly by till operators. At the front of the till, they advertise for new staff.

Even at 8:00am, the car park is so full it’s hard to get a place.

Anyway, I do the other half of my shopping at Morrisons (LSE: MRW). It’s only a few hundred metres away from Aldi; I go there straight after. The car park is much bigger and there’s plenty of space. You don’t have to pay for a trolley and as you walk in there is music playing and the store is warm and bright. There are much more staff around, in fetching green aprons no less.

However, and this is key, the store is nowhere near as busy as Aldi. I’ve been shopping in Morrisons for a long time, roughly from when the store opened 20 years ago. There used to be more customers.

Overall the ‘shopping experience’ is much better than in Aldi, but the prices are quite a lot worse. My tip for shopping in Morrisons is to only buy things that are on offer, or only buy Morrisons’ own brand — but even then it’s still dearer than Aldi.

You can check out your shopping much more quickly at Morrisons, and at the tills they are advertising their online shopping service. Better late than never.

Hopefully this snapshot has given you some insight into how the businesses may be operating on a personal level — it’s important to look at figures with shares, but it’s also great if you can get personal experience with the business. That’s why I check out branches of HSBC when I’m in town, too.

Aldi aren’t on the UK stock market and I don’t have shares in Morrisons. I do, however, have shares in Sainsbury’s (LSE: SBRY). I was attracted by the good dividend yield (currently 5.41%) and the nice P/E ratio (currently 9.6). I believe that Sainsbury’s will be affected less by the likes of Aldi and Lidl than Morrisons or Tesco, but they still will be affected in some way, shape or form. That’s probably why they’re going to open 15 Nettos by the end of the year, and there are rumours that a Sainsbury’s store might be turned into a Netto! Overall, though, I think Sainsbury’s business model has a decent chance of retaining most of its middle-class customers, especially down south.

Looking at Morrisons as a share is interesting, too. The dividend yield is a stonking 7.24% and the P/E ratio is only 9.5. Seems cheap as chips. However, you should think carefully before investing in this share. I have no current plans to do so, even though it’s trading around the level of its Net Asset Value (NAV). Take a look at how much the share price has dropped over the last six months and over the last year. Just over a year ago the share was trading at 312p. Six months ago it was 250p.

I believe Morrisons will be effected quite a bit more than Sainsbury’s by Aldi, Lidl and other discounters. Sainsbury’s has many more stores, including convenience stores, located in London and the South East. And the shopping experience is different in Sainsbury’s, too — some Sainsbury’s have a pharmacy and even a bank to pull customers in and retain them. What’s more, Sainsbury’s online offering is more advanced than Morrisons.
