Medium Term Goals

Two new medium term goals, aim to be within a year. Obtain a basic level of self defence. Do some form of 'trained' dancing similar to salsa dancing. Already have these to an extent but want to get better.

Two walks done, brisker pace.

Congratulations Michael Adams

Have to say this before I sleep. Truly amazing performance from Adams. I hope everyone here sees we are witnessing the strongest player in British history in terms of total strength. Such a role model. The prize money really is not enough for him. You have to go further really and say he is one of the best English Sportsmen of recent times. Thank you for being English and British Mickey! You are a true inspiration for me!

Downside Risk

Downside risk When you’re thinking of selling a share you should be aware of the downside risk. Best example I can think of is BT. Bought it around 92p in 2009. Got to nearly 500p in late 2015. Now it’s about 208p. Or think how much BP dropped after the spill. Much higher now though. It's good to be positive and optimistic but you should try and consider the downside risk in anything. What's the risk of not meeting new quality people? What's the risk of not maintaining relationships with good people? It's a bit similar to 'opportunity cost'. What are the costs of keeping doing what you're doing and what could you gain or lose by doing something else? If you have clear goals you'll know what you want so you will often go for it hard... but be aware of the risks too. You can use it to your advantage in shares by shorting shares where people have not evaluated the downside risks enough. I still believe both Tesco and Morrisons are overpriced because some people don't really see the threat of Aldi and Lidl.

They're not as big in London as they are 'up north' for example and I'm sure a lot of rich people have never shopped in Aldi... the threat is there though. The downside risk is much more pronounced with spreadbetting because potentially you can lose a lot. If you think something is going to be flat or close to flat you shouldn’t do it. On the flip side the upside risk is much higher. In the 1 minute it takes to place a trade you could make more than your day’s wages with a relatively small amount of money. Time risk and do not be needy. It’s very important not be needy… especially when you’re spending time in front of a computer. Ideally how I feel is that I should get my results from what I’m doing then move onto something else. Don’t waste time just aimlessly browsing. However you have to sometimes just be PATIENT with spreadbetting.

It’s quite hard to know how much time to allocate it but if you’re doing it you should probably allocate a bit each weekday- it doesn’t have to be LOTS though. You can save time to an extent doing this if you want by just having limit orders and letting the spreads hit them. You should look at what is the return you are getting on your time and your money. Again trust your instincts. I’m getting to the stage where I believe I KNOW something is good value and then I should certainly instinctively do it. I’m right at least 85% of the time. However if I look too much I may just do it when it is a quite good opportunity. Anyway pleased overall with share performance... other areas in life room for improvement though. So less time on money and more time on other things..

Saturday, 22 December 2018 Look At The Watch Look At The Watch Hi World... Blasting out some great articles recently... personally I would like to charge for these... but I'm just going to give it out free. Feel free to donate if you like them though... LOOK AT THE WATCH Hi Ladies... look at me... I'm rich LOOK AT THE WATCH!! Some people feel the need to buy things to validate themselves. Like a posh watch. Maybe they think that people will look at them and think they are rich/cool by looking at the watch. A posh watch doesn't mean you're rich. It just means you've spent a lot of money on a watch. Same thing with clothes. I have a cheap watch and don't buy many clothes. I don't feel the need to prove to the world I am rich or have money. Truth is I do have money (not rich though at all) but don't feel the need to spend money to validate myself. So yeah... especially for my female readers... you don't have to buy fancy clothes to be attractive or cool. Just develop yourself.

God May Bless You

Hi... Blasting this one out after walk in Huddersfield rain... Have to do these walks... even in rain... My life is so surreal... I'll just let you know though... God has saved me from dying over 100 times perhaps. Surreal. So I'm not dead... I still have much more to write though... I aim to deliver as much quality content as possible. I am confident I can deliver more. God may bless you for supporting me. Thank you.

Weight Loss Comments

I'm working on my weight too. When I was 14 could run 100m in 14 secs. Still a bit overweight but I've lost about 1.5 stones in about 1.5 months. The main thing that matters is how YOU feel about your body.

Friday, 30 November 2018 Materialism as Proving Your Worth Materialism as Proving Your Worth Word up... This is coming to you after my win against highest rated opponent I've played in chess. I won on time... When I played chess I really hardly cared about money at all. I would spend hours just studying and playing. I just liked the challenge and flow. But you can't really live as a chessplayer in the UK. I know Grandmasters, smart people who've dedicated their lives to the game... basically living in poverty. And the sad thing is... there will be 12 year olds who are better players than them now... These days... if I'm not being paid for it I don't feel 'obliged' to do or say anything. Truth is, I actually have enough money to do what I want really... but I'm still tight with money... Because I remember how hard I had to work to get it. All those of years of 'education'. Knowing what I do about the world now, I wouldn't have gone to uni at 18. And it's like... before I wrote my novel I would buy LOADS of books... Then I finished my novel and saw that not many people were buying it... and I stopped buying books really. It would have to be a VERY HIGH quality book for me to buy it now, something like Cornwell... And I would do that partly because he's been generous enough with his time to talk with me a bit... no other famous proper writer has done that really... It's like these days I will think how much will it cost me in petrol to get there? And maybe I should loosen that up A BIT... because it's interesting to go to new places... but still keep it in mind... Because materialism provides worth in some way. You need money to eat. Anyone can say anything to you... but if someone values you in some way they will pay you money in a job... Ha... so yeah... materialism provides value.

Why I Believe I'm a Good Chess Coach and Why it's worth Paying me with Minimum Wage to Coach You... if you can afford it...

Hi... So as well as doing financial coaching I now do some chess coaching... If you're like a GOOD chess player... I am not good enough to coach you, let's state that right away don't want to waste your time... However if you are just starting and haven't played many/any competitive games yet... I think I'm worth it... here's why...

So when I was 7 my parents took me out of the state eduction system and put me into QEGS, that stands for Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. I already knew how to play chess then, my dad taught me when I was 4. We would play in a caravan in the south of France... I didn't play much before QEGS but I knew how the pieces moved. I think the fees at QEGS junior school now are around £11,000 per year in the junior school... Anyway so when I was 7 I would play at the school chess club a LOT. I didn't have any real proper training but I played a lot. I got in the school teams sometimes, but I wasn't really given a chance. They did have good players like David Jackson and Gareth Mitchell so it was quite hard to get in the team. Anyway I didn't go to QEGS senior school, I went to Batley Grammar School, back when it was private. I think my parents paid about £4,500 a year back then... this would have been in 1995 so inflation etc.

I know it has gone back into the state sector now, and I don't recommend this school, but back then it had a good chess team. They had gotten into the Semi finals of the national schools championship I think. They had players like Andrew Tennant and Andrew Wager. So of course I PAID, lol, to join the chess club right away. I was there like most break times. It was only really the under 18 teams they had so I didn't have a chance to play in that team in the first year but I was a reserve. It was the second year before I actually broke into the team, and I played every competitive match since then. I did things like turn up in my Yorkshire chess jumper at St Bede's to play junior tournaments solo. So when I was 13 I was told I should join a chess club so I joined Netherton chess club. I was OK when I was 13... I was very passionate into chess... Often for the next few years it would be play local league Wednesday, for the school on Friday, then Yorkshire league on the Saturday. I never thought about making money then at all, just playing chess and reading really. There were certainly many weaknesses in my game up until the age of 16. Remember the grading list only game out once a year back then etc etc. I still hadn't had much proper coaching by 16. Left BGS at 16 to join Greenhead College... which is a MUCH better educational place. I was playing a LOT now. Like my dad shoved me off to play a junior tournament solo in Hull at 15. Forget getting like an after school job, I was doing my studies and playing chess. Sure I'd already been all over the country playing chess as I broke into the Yorkshire setup at 13 but now I would just try and play everywhere. I read loads of chess books. I played LOADS of league chess. So I went to Leeds Uni for a year... and they didn't really have a proper chessclub although Peter Shaw was there, studying for his maths PHd. He trained me a LITTLE bit but I wish I had got more training from him. Even by then or soon after I was playing a lot online. I think by this stage back then I would have been about 1900 elo strength, something like that. I had TURNED DOWN my parents offer to get coached by IM Angus Dunnington... maybe should have taken it even though it was expensive, David Jackson did and he played for England for his age. I have beaten David Jackson by the way ;) I bought and read a LOT of chess books.

When I was at Leeds Uni I started writing my 'chess novel' 'Playing to Win'. I knew at this stage I wasn't good enough to be a chess pro, but I still wanted to be a writer. I had read lots of John Updike books for example. So I spent 18 months of my life for 5p an hour writing a chess novel... That kinda gets you in a chess and writing mode... Relatively my chess strength peak might have been at the age of about 21... I got up to about a 129 grade before they were inflated... I've beaten players like Greg Eagleton, Richard Allis, James Lawson... So... I have spent a LOT of time and money playing and studying chess... I think I am a good teacher as I've been a student ambassador at uni and done a lot of sales and customer service jobs. My last COMPETITIVE OTB was in December 2008 as I was working for British Gas then... making decent money. For sure a min wage job pays more than chess... but chess is great mental training. If I HAD gotten better or more coaching I would have been much better and it would have saved me a LOT of time... Anyway feel free to contact me if you would like me to coach you for minimum wage at chess! Thanks for reading :)

Chess Planning

Post by David Gilbert » Mon Jul 03, 2023 1:40 pm If you've got time and some spare cash, maybe start by joining the ECF and entering the weekender or one (or two) of the rated weekday sections at British Championships. You're not going to improve if you don't play. Getting in ten or more games in a week at the British will at least get you on the rating list. PS: Don't hang about - entry fees go up after tomorrow. Current plan I think will be to play local league chess... already played some games etc with clocks at local club. Want to get some wins there... and hopefully in Yorkshire league too... Then... as soon as I'm ready... maybe a fairly local congress...

Chess Plan

Re: Yorkshire Chess Post by Mark Howitt » Mon Jul 03, 2023 1:17 pm The tips are kinda for a guy in this situation... Have decent money in cash and shares... Prob starting a new fulltime job soon... Has lots of other goals like fitness etc... But STILL wants to get better at chess... We'll see how I do...

Paid The Cost to be the Boss

Hi... Quick one here... I want to deliver my best writing WHILE being paid/compensated for it... I think I've like earned the right... Writing a novel for 5p an hour... when you've done that there's not much that can stop you. Peak per hour writing has been £50 per hour roughly. At this stage in life I can't be like... restrained... have to let it flow... feel best is yet to come... in many ways...
