First of all thanks to Steve Mann- his site was the first one where one could obtain the result of this publically!
This is an early morning blast.....
Might add to it later......
There's been some talk online about how good the Huddersfield team is....... would other players get in the team etc...
Going to quickly state I'm happy with this result- what's surprising is I believe Alwoodley board one is only about 15-16 and he's beaten Walton... away from home!
Yet writing more generally about Huddersfield chess... who would get in this team? Well obviously there are players like Adam Ashton and his daughter who would get right in- will they be playing for Hudds this season? Adam Ashton could play on top board for most divison one teams after all......
Mitchell Burke would obvs get in if he wanted to play. Oliver Graham and Gary Hinchcliffe probably would- I have to say I don't know too much about these last two players but on grading they probably would.
However........ what I'm sure some of my readers are asking is........... would Mark Howitt get in the current team playing on Saturday? This is one match I COULD have played in........ but because I didn't put the training time in I thought would be needed for OTB chess I didn't ask........ who knows if the same thing might apply to Mitchell Burke working in the casino?
When you look at the team.......
There's two main things I'm going to say about it. You could describe it in general as an old or experienced team. It's good that the team has got experience of playing plenty of OTB chess. However...... I believe Roget Keely is around 80. The youngest of the team is Peter Hepworth and he's about 26-27 I believe. And yes for my fans/readers wondeirng I have beaten him OTB but it was in a casual match in 2003! He would have been about 7-8 then I think. As some readers will already know I have beaten Eagleton who I believe is the second youngest of that team with black in 2004.
I'm still playing online and of course coaching (actually spent some of the Saturday writing up a report on one of my students) yet more work would have to be done on my openings for me to request to play for Huddersfield. I have done quite a lot I guess but it kinda hit home to me playing a rapid game- there are some things I should know by instinct that I don't quite know yet. Sure I've still had plenty of wins online but it would take quite a lot of (unpaid in money terms) work to play OTB at a level which would preserve my unbeaten OTB record since January 2007.
